Flight to Iceland

Skaftafell

Skaftafell is a national park which is located at the southwest of the glacier Vatnajökull.

It rests at the edge of the washed-over gravel plains composed of dark basalt that was ground from the glaciers underside and carried down by repeated floods.

They still occur regularly, bringing huge icebergs down in the rushing waters, especially after volcanic eruptions under the ice of the glacier Vatnajökull.

Cozy birch woods with waterfalls, topped by heaths and mountaintops

The greening vegetation of the park offers a haven for birdlife and its streams cool the visitor.

There is a Visitor center in Skaftafell called Skaftafellsstofa, where visitors can obtain information on the history of fire and ice in the region and how the powerful forces of nature formed the National Park.

Information is also available about the people of Öræfi, their culture and how they survived for centuries living in the close vicinity of the glacier with it’s fire and floods.
